Sonya and Ken are lecturers at Anytown University. Sonya is a member of the university’s boxing club and she persuades Ken to join. The day of the next boxing club training session is Sonya’s birthday. Before going to the training session, Sonya spends several hours in the pub, drinking with friends. By the time she leaves the pub to go to the training session, Sonya has drunk five pints of lager and several drams of whisky. During the training session in the university gym, Sonya delivers an uppercut to Ken’s jaw, quickly followed by a left hook to the side of his head. Ken falls to the ground, and hits his head on a bench. Ken’s girlfriend, Cammy, had come along to the gym to watch the training session. She seeks Sonya strike Ken and runs towards Sonya, screaming abuse at her. Sonya delivers a punch to Cammy’s stomach which knocks her to the ground, whereupon Sonya punches her several times in the face. Cammy suffers minor bruising and grazes. Sonya, who is now very distressed, runs out of the gym and into the changing rooms and does not bother to attend to Ken, who is still lying unconscious on the ground. Other members of the boxing club call an ambulance. At hospital, Ken is found to have a fractured jaw and a ruptured eardrum.
A week later, Ken sees Sonya walking towards him in the university library. As she approaches, Sonya raises her arm, intending to give Ken a hug and apologise for what she has done. Ken is afraid that Sonya may be about to hit him again. He grabs a heavy, hardback book from the nearest shelf and thrusts it towards Sonya’s face. As a result, several of Sonya’s teeth are broken. In the weeks following these incidents, Cammy becomes increasingly depressed. She has to seek professional psychological help in order to cope with the trauma caused by having witnessed Sonya strike her boyfriend Ken.
Advise the Crown Prosecution Service as to the respective criminal liabilities, if any, of Sonya, Ken, and Cammy.
