The aim of this assignment is to assess your understanding of the statistical concepts covered in the
Clinical Research Skills module and your ability to manipulate and analyse data using SPSS.
For this assignment you are asked to analyse lung function data collected from two groups, healthy
volunteers and asthmatic patients. In total there are data from 265 people of limited age range. The
data is contained in an Excel spreadsheet FEV1.xls, and consists of the followingvariables:
Variable Name Categorical codes and details
Subject ID ID Unique subject identification number.
Patient group GROUP 1=Healthy volunteers,
2=Asthmatic patient volunteers.
Lung function FEV1 The volume (litres) exhaled during the first second of a forced
expiratory manoeuvre from a full lung capacity.
Sex GENDER 1=Female,
2=Male.
Subject age AGE Age in years.
Subject height HEIGHT Height in metres.
Subject weight WEIGHT Weight in kg.
