CRIM 3311 Advanced Theoretical Perspectives in Criminology

CRIM 3311 Advanced Theoretical Perspectives in Criminology

This assignment is worth 10% of your final grade for this course.

This is the third analytic paper you will write for the course. If possible, review the

Open Learning Faculty Member’s feedback for Analytic Paper 2 (Module 7) and try

to incorporate these suggestions to improve this paper.

Instructions

  1. Access one of the following scholarly journals with an Indigenous focus.

Some examples include: Canadian Journal of Native Studies; American Indian

Culture and Research Journal; AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous

Peoples; Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society; Journal of Indigenous

Research; Journal of Indigenous Studies/La Revue des Études

Indigènes; Native American and Indigenous Studies Journal; and Indigenous

Law Journal.

  1. Read about the purpose of the journal and who the contributors are. Browse

through various articles and find one related to criminology.

  1. Read the article carefully and respond to the following questions:

o What is the mandate or focus of the journal you retrieved the article

from? Why are scholarly journals with Indigenous-only content

important to the study of criminology?

o What is the thesis or purpose of the article? Why is the topic under

study important from an Indigenous perspective? The thesis is

generally found in the introductory paragraph, but you should be

able to explain in your own words what this article is trying to

accomplish.

o How is/are the author(s) actually doing the study? In other words,

what is the method? What elements of decolonized and Indigenous

methodologies did you find evidence of? Provide specific examples.

o What are the main results or findings of this study/article? Focus on

the findings that relate to the main questions or what the author(s)

is/are trying to accomplish. You can also discuss any findings that

either the author(s) or you think are particularly interesting or

unexpected.

o Did this study contribute to the field of Indigenous criminology or

social policy in the way that the author hoped? In other words, did it

reach its goals? For this section, you need to use your own

assessment and critical thinking to evaluate whether or not you think

the article accomplished what it set out to do.

o How, if at all, did what was presented in the article relate to the

themes discussed in your assigned readings/viewings? In this section,

demonstrate your ability to apply the concepts from the Monchalin

(2016) and Victor (2007) readings, and the videos. Which of these

themes did you find most interesting, and why?

Writing Guidelines

Your paper should be approximately 3–4 pages in length (not including title and

reference pages), and double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font. Since this

is a reflective assignment, write in the first person.

Use proper APA referencing when citing any material from the course readings (this

includes both paraphrasing and direct quotes). The APA Citation Style – Quick

Guide can be accessed through the TRU Library website.
