Steiner and Xu (2018) elaborate that binge-watching facilitates individuals to immerse themselves
to become a part of the narrative. This immersion lets viewers to follow the storyline without
interruption and this serves as a strong motivating factor for individuals to practice bingewatching. (Shim & Kim, 2018) There was a positive correlation between the amount of television
viewing and a proportional increase in online fandom activities. This further iterates that bingewatching reinforces the desire to dwell in fantasy than reality. (Rubenking et al., 2018) The more
the individual binge-watches, more the sympathy and empathy they build towards fictional
characters. (Tukachinsky & Eyal, 2018) This crave to escape reality and emerge into a fantasy
world did not exist during the period of linear television. Therefore, Steiner & Xu (2018) have
concluded that the theories proposed by Katz (1973) doesn’t effectively translate the motives like
sense of completion and narrative immersion which exists at large right now.
