Efficacyfect of dietary fenugreek supplementation on lowering blood glucose and glycated haemaoglobin (HbA1c) in patients with type 2 diabetes T2DM imellitus: A systematic review
DISSERTATION PROPOSAL: Background – making the case (200 words)
Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) have been suggested to have potential anti-diabetic effects. It is a widely used herb, in for the treatment for of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in India. Diabetes mellitus (DM) (1). It is reported to have an effect on lowering glycated haemoglobin and total cholesterol has glycaemic and Total-cholesterol (TC) lowering functions (2). Fenugreek powder has been can be used as an adjunct d on to control glycemic level as well as serum lipid levels in Noninsulin-dependent T2DM DM (NIDDM) (3). Fenugreek seed has been shown to reduce as a therapy to DM showed reduction in serum levels fasting blood sugar, of FBS, cholesterol lipids as well as HbA1c (4) in patients with type 2 diabetes . Aqueous extract of fenugreek (1.32 g) used for 3 months has shown showed significant reductireduction on in glucose, HbA1c as well as and malondialdehyde which is a marker for oxidative stress(5) . Other parameters such as iInsulin resistance, anthropometryic and antioxidant status also improved(5). Hence, extract of fenugreek as an adjunct supplementation along with routine diabetesic treatment may will be beneficial in ensuring optimal control of diabetes parameters. Its active ingredients includes such as galactomannan, saponins, trigonelle, diosgenin and 4-hydroxyisoleucine, haves pronounced effects on blood parameters in DM includinglowering total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins. They have same also also showned improvements in the levels of high-density lipoproteins (5). Understanding the effects The activity of the natural compounds in fenugreek may also be suitable of discoveringinform the discovery of novel anti-diabetic drugs in the near future (1). Thus, this study will helps us to understand the clinical significance of fenugreek.
