I think the E-Verify verification system is fair to the employers. By law employers are obligated to hire legally documented employees. The verification system basically matches the employees name and social security number in a uniformed government database. If the information doesn’t match, then the employees have the opportunity to fix the errors in a couple of days and I think this is fair to the employees and employers.
Was Swift & Company treated fairly by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), given the law that ICE has been charged by Congress to enforce? Why or why not?
As much as I don’t like the way ICE raided the factories, Swift & Company was fully aware they were being investigated and the government was coming for them. I don’t think it was fair to the employees who were torn apart from their families without allowing them to make proper arrangements for the families they leave behind in the U.S. I blame the Swift & Company for not notifying their employees.
What specific strategies would you recommend Swift employ to attempt to change immigration and employment laws, so they are more favorable to its business? Explain why.
I recommend Swift to create programs to help un-documented employees to become legal through work sponsorships. At the end of the day I think America need to be honest with reality that the jobs these immigrants are willing to do American citizens are not willing to do these jobs. So instead profiting off of these undocumented immigrants help them become legal.
In the state Texas where I live, which is the second-largest population for “foreign-born residents, native-born, unauthorized immigrant, and legal immigrant residents” (Mosher, 2018). “The research found that native-born residents were most likely to commit and be convicted of crimes, while unauthorized immigrants saw a conviction rate that was about 50% lower. Legal immigrants appeared to be the most law-abiding, with 86% fewer convictions than native-born Texans” (Mosher, 2018). If the company’s like Swift and the Gebbers Farm continue to sweep this important issue under the rug they will continue receive heavy fines, losing majority of their employees, and families will be torn apart.
