I believe that Propp is a good Scholar to research as much like Aristotle, he was the first to
convey new ideas about character’s and how they’re used in the narratives of stories.
(Vladimir, Theory and history of folklore, 1984). I also think he is a key person to study as his
ideas of the false hero follow very much to the ideas that Aristotle started with his theories of
the tragic hero (Hartman E, Aristotle on Character Formation, 2013). For example, Propp
believed that, “The false hero will try to steal the hero’s thunder, grabbing the credit and
perhaps of the worst kind, who plays on people’s good nature to boldly steal in broad
daylight.” (Propp, Theory and history of folklore, 1984). Here, he is arguing that the false
hero is a character who will try and be the hero but doesn’t have the same traditional morals
as the actual hero. However, he is also building on it in terms of his ideas about how the false
hero uses others, This more modern idea links well to a lot of the character’s that are seen on
TV today.
Building further on Aristotle and Propp’s ideas is Dr Igor Prusa. As a lecturer in Media
Studies at the Metropolitan University in Prague, Prusa has published several papers
outlining his ideas in a variety of subjects, including anti-heroism in Japanese / Western
popular fiction (Igor Prusa, Research Gate, 2019). I believe that he is an important person
for me to look at as his ideas can easily be related to modern examples while also still being
compared with more historical theories.
