Case Study
Mr Sean Murphy is 49 years old and lives with his sister and her family. Sean is currently attending a daycare centre. With age, Sean’s verbal abilities have decreased, which can frustrate him greatly and lead to episodes of challenging behaviour. Sean’s sister is worried that if this challenging behaviour persists, Sean may have to move into a residential setting.
Discuss TWO theories which explain communication and how the theories may inform the social care response to Sean’s needs, including how participatory communication may be promoted.

*The ‘assignment marking grid’ outlines generic elements expected of essays, for example, demonstration of ‘knowledge and understanding’, ‘breadth and utilisation of material and/or practice examples’, ‘correct ‘referencing’. The content guidelines (above) provide an indication of the content weighting, that is, the approximate proportion of the assignment that should be devoted to each element.
