The EU developed the GDPR to help bring more control over personal data use to the individual. However, the system is strict when compared to that adopted by other countries such as the OECD nations. For example, the regulations ensure that companies cannot share data across countries without a system that works the same way as the GDPR. Trade pundits feel that is restrictive and would hinder the free movement of digital information. The proposed study intends to evaluate the impact of the GDPR on international trade. The idea is to evaluate whether the restrictions of the system create an environment with minimal risk, or this is not the case.
