The project title is “Oral health care in the Intensive Care Unit- What Could Nurse do to Improve Practice?” The research topic is based on the results of the literature review on patients’ oral health in the ICU which revealed that an alarming percentage of 93% of the patients in the ICU experienced poor oral health hygiene, thus acting as a detriment to their overall health (El Aziz, 2014). Furthermore, a study conducted by Miranda et al. (2016) found that 87% of nurses have issues in the maintenance of oral health despite having adequate knowledge thus raising questions about the impact of the routine practices. According to Akin et al. (2014) the role of the nurse in ensuring oral hygiene was especially important in the case of intubated patients that are fully dependent on the nursing staff for maintenance of oral care. The authors argued that oral hygiene was given low priority because it was one of the most difficult procedures to perform given that some patients bite the nurses because of confusion. Challenges such as mentioned above complicated the maintenance of a good oral hygiene. Concerning the nurses’ attitude, the literature review also revealed that most nurses had a positive attitude towards oral hygiene, yet they did not follow the best practices considering the delicate nature of the patients (Moore & Cunningham, 2016). Therefore, education on oral hygiene provided to nurses are essential in maintaining a good overall health of the ICU patients
