develop a one-page proposal to identify an operational improvement (or suggestion for improvement) at a research institute called EPRI (electric power research institute).
You must identify a place of employment and discuss what you plan to study and improve. This is just creative writing using lessons from the text.
In a later assignment, I’ll choose you to write about the current process (obviously creative writing), identify problems or areas worthy of improvement, make suggestions to the Director/supervisor/boss of your department, and, where possible, begin improvements and measure change. You can choose any type of operational methodology presented in your text. You may limit yourself to one improvement/technique if you are able to implement this improvement. Otherwise, you must make two suggested improvements.
As an example of a good project, a former student who worked in an office setting identified inefficiencies in how work was received, processed and filed. She initially drew a flow chart of the process under study, describing what work was required at each point. She then came up with two alternative methods that she believed would improve the process. After gaining approval from her supervisor, she assigned one office worker to use Alternative Process 1, another worker to use Alternative 2 and at least one other worker used the existing system. At the end of the trial period (about 4 weeks), she compared efficiencies across the three processes and made a recommendation. The reason this project was so successful was that she quickly identified the problem and allowed time to implement changes and record the results. Additionally, she used process mapping throughout the project and other operational techniques and/or terms.
